The medical outreach first started in Hammer’s house when he first moved to Togo. By the grace of God, we were able to build a building for the clinic near the church premises. With help of other volunteers such as Sara Afakule, we opened doors to start seeing patients here every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each clinic day is begun by a short morning devotion and prayer before we begin work. At the medical clinic we provide primary health care, including wound care, malaria treatment for large and small wounds, and even some emergent treatments as needed. We also treat various different tropical diseases and infections. In Togo there is one doctor for every 19,000 people. To compare this to the US there is one doctor for every 400 people. Now also remembering that most of those doctors in Togo live in the capitol city of Lome, you can see the incredible need for medical care.
Our medicines and tools are donated to us when short term groups are coming over and through support of various individuals and churches. We do ask patients to contribute about half a dollar for all their treatments so that we can get some medicines locally when we do need too. Some times when we see that a work is beyond our care at the clinic, we help patients with a portion of the cost to go to a bigger hospital for more critical care.
Currently we have some local believers who are in our training program who are helping us in the medical clinic. Our hope is that the medical clinic will grow to a point that we will be training local people to be taking care of themselves and prevent serious infections that are typically ignored. We are also open to God’s leading to expand our clinic outreach if we have the trained staff and resources to grow larger. The Medical Outreach has been life changing for our community and also for Togo Christian Mission because it is enabling to make Disciples.
